Musinsa in Seoul: Which Store to Visit and How the Tax Refund Works

Musinsa in Seoul: Which Store to Visit and How the Tax Refund Works

Choose by what you want to buy: Musinsa Standard sells the company's own basics and outerwear, Musinsa Store mixes more than a hundred Korean labels, Musinsa Kicks is for shoes, and Musinsa Beauty is for cosmetics. Myeongdong is the easiest first stop, Seongsu has the largest store, and Hongdae has all four. Musinsa says its stores in tourist districts refund tax at the till: bring your physical passport and spend at least 15,000 won in one purchase, and on purchases under 1 million won the tax comes off before you pay.

Store, Standard, Kicks or Beauty: What Each Sign Means

Watch the shopping bags on a Seoul subway car for ten minutes and you will see the same five letters again and again. Musinsa began in 2001 as an online sneaker community and grew into one of Korea's largest online fashion platforms. Over the past few years it has opened physical stores across the city, and they now sit near the top of many visitors' shopping lists. In the first half of 2026, foreign shoppers made up roughly two-thirds of sales at its Myeongdong stores, News Tomato reported. The catch for a first-timer is that "Musinsa" on a sign can mean four different kinds of shop.

Musinsa Standard is the company's own clothing brand: plain, well-cut basics for men and women, plus Home and Beauty lines in the bigger branches. Think shirts, slacks, knitwear, padded jackets and wool coats at mid-range prices, in a uniform look from store to store. This is the place to go if you want to fill gaps in your wardrobe quickly.

Musinsa Store is a multi-brand select shop. The Myeongdong branch carries more than 110 labels, and Musinsa says over 80% of them are Korean, many of them designer brands that built their following online. If you want clothes you would not find at home, start here. Every tag carries a QR code that shows the member price, live stock and customer reviews.

Musinsa Kicks is the shoe shop, a nod to the company's roots. Expect a wall of sneakers, a running zone called Musinsa Run, a Bag & Cap Club corner, and floors for loafers and boots. Musinsa Beauty is the newest format. It began as a zone inside Megastore Seongsu and opened its first standalone store in Hongdae in September 2026. Finally, the Megastore in Seongsu puts several of these under one roof. If you only have time for one stop, that is the one that shows the whole range.

Myeongdong: Three Stores Within a Short Walk

Myeongdong is the easiest place to start, especially if you are staying near City Hall or Euljiro. Three Musinsa stores sit within a few minutes' walk of each other, so you can compare them in one afternoon.

Musinsa Standard Myeongdong opened in March 2024, and more than half of its sales now come from foreign shoppers. In September 2026 the brand opened a second branch, Musinsa Standard Myeongdong Jungang, on Myeongdong 8-gil near Myeongdong Station. It covers four floors, about 1,650 square meters, with men's and women's clothing, homeware and beauty. It is also the first branch to offer a custom T-shirt service. You choose from graphics built around Seoul: the city's "Seoul My Soul" brand and its Soul Friends characters, a tiger-and-magpie motif from Korean folk painting, artwork from local designers, and the logos of old Seoul names such as Taegeukdang, a bakery that opened in 1946. It makes a far more personal souvenir than a keyring, so ask at the counter which designs are available that day.

Musinsa Store Myeongdong opened in January 2026 across a basement and three floors. It is the select-shop format, with zones for sneakers, younger streetwear and women's labels. The basement is the Bag & Cap Club, full of logo caps, tote bags and small leather goods. Those pieces fold flat, so they are easy to fit into a full suitcase. If you are also hunting for markets and malls, our guide to where to shop for clothes in Seoul maps the wider neighborhood.

Seongsu: The Megastore and the Streets Around It

Seongsu is where Musinsa thinks big. Musinsa Megastore Seongsu opened on April 24, 2026 at 62 Seongsu-iro, about a five-minute walk from Seongsu Station. It fills a basement and four floors, around 6,600 square meters, and holds roughly 1,000 brands. Musinsa calls it the largest single fashion and beauty store in Korea. On the second floor is a beauty department of about 480 square meters. The fourth floor is a food court called Food Garden, with names such as Fuglen coffee and Tteoksan, a Busan-style tteokbokki stall. Plan for a full afternoon there, not a quick look.

The Megastore is also set up for visitors. Members of the Musinsa global app can pick up a welcome gift from a vending machine. Shoppers who show a passport get an extra discount. Scanning a product's QR code brings up reviews and details translated into your own language. A Musinsa Standard branch on Seongsu-iro opened the same day.

Around it you will find Musinsa Kicks Seongsu, which opened in March 2026 across a basement and two floors in what used to be Korea's handmade-shoe district, and the Musinsa Store Seongsu select shop. All of them are easy to fit into a Seongsu day of cafes and pop-ups.

Hongdae and Gangnam: Sneakers, Beauty and a Pharmacy Floor

Hongdae has all four formats, each in its own building, and the stores sit close to each other in the streets around Hongik University Station. Musinsa Standard Hongdae was the brand's very first store, opened in 2021. It reopened in November 2025 as a flagship of about 1,980 square meters over three floors, with a Home floor and a Beauty floor. Musinsa Kicks Hongdae opened in January 2026 near Exit 9 and runs over three floors: running shoes on the first, outdoor gear and the Bag & Cap Club on the second, and leather shoes and boots on the third. Musinsa Store Hongdae, the select shop, has been in the area since 2023.

The newest is Musinsa Beauty Hongdae, which opened on September 11, 2026. Musinsa says it stocks around 12,000 products from about 870 brands across four floors, and that roughly 70% of the brands on its street-level floors are independent Korean labels. The first floor is makeup and fragrance, the second is skincare, hair and body, and the third has a robot cafe with an outdoor terrace. In the basement is a pharmacy-run beauty section, the Beauty Onnuri Pharmacy, where pharmacists are on hand to answer questions. It is an unusual setup for a beauty store.

Gangnam suits you if you are staying south of the river. Musinsa Store Gangnam opened in August 2025 on Gangnam-daero, about two minutes on foot from Sinnonhyeon Station. It has around 130 brands over a basement and two floors, with Nike and adidas shop-in-shops. Musinsa Standard has had a Gangnam branch nearby since 2022.

Winter Coats and Getting the Size Right

If you land in Seoul between November and February, you may find yourself shopping for a coat in the first hour of your trip. Musinsa Standard's outerwear is the most practical reason for many visitors to walk in. Its City Leisure light down jacket sold out repeatedly last winter, and the fall/winter 2026 campaign, "Seoul, Standard", is built around Victoria wool coats and City Leisure pieces. A light down jacket packs small, which makes it a sensible buy on the first day of a trip. Our guide to packing for a Korean winter explains how locals layer under the long padded coats you will see on every street.

Sizing takes a minute to read. Many Korean labels print a number next to S, M or L, such as 95, 100 or 105. For men's tops, that number is the chest measurement in centimeters, so a 100 is close to a men's medium-large in many other sizing systems. Fits differ from brand to brand, especially in the multi-brand Musinsa Store, so try things on. You can also scan the QR code on the tag: Musinsa reviews often list the reviewer's height and weight next to the size they bought. That helps a lot with an oversized coat that looks the same on the hanger in three sizes.

Timing matters too. Musinsa runs large seasonal sales several times a year, often in stores as well as online. If your trip falls in late November, check the dates in our guide to Korea's Black Friday sale season before you buy.

How the Tax Refund Works at Musinsa

Korea refunds the value-added tax on goods that visitors take home. The quickest version is the immediate refund at the till, where the tax is taken off the price before you pay. In May 2025, Musinsa said its Musinsa Standard stores in Gangnam, Myeongdong, Seongsu, Hannam and Hongdae offer on-the-spot tax refunds, and that this is the service foreign shoppers use most. Some branches also offer luggage storage and currency exchange machines. Musinsa does not publish a store-by-store list, so ask at the counter before you pay at any branch.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization's VisitKorea guide, the steps are:

  • Check that you qualify. Visitors staying in Korea for less than six months are eligible. People who work in Korea are not.
  • Bring your physical passport. The cashier scans it when you pay.
  • Spend at least 15,000 won in one purchase at a participating store.
  • Know the limits. The immediate refund applies when a single purchase is under 1 million won, up to 5 million won in total for your stay. The tax comes off your bill, and the receipt shows the refund.
  • Above the limits, or if the refund was not applied at the till, keep the refund receipt. At the airport, show your goods, receipts and passport to customs for export confirmation, then collect the refund at a refund counter or kiosk. Goods must leave Korea within three months of purchase.

Keep the items unused and the tags on until you fly, because customs can ask to see them. The amount you get back is the tax minus a handling fee, so it is a little less than the full 10% VAT. The receipt shows the exact figure.

Haru's Note

Go to one store on your first evening, not your last. A light down jacket bought on day one keeps you warm for the whole trip. The refund comes off at the till, so it costs you nothing to shop early. The same jacket bought on the final afternoon only gets you as far as the airport.

And make the custom T-shirt in Myeongdong your one deliberate souvenir. Most of what you carry home from Seoul could have been bought anywhere. A shirt with a 1946 bakery's logo, chosen by you at a counter on Myeongdong 8-gil, could not.
