What Is Nine to Six About?
Nine to Six is a Korean office romance set at a car company called Chronic Motors. SBS describes it as an on-and-off work-life balance romance: a rational woman who has spent her life proving herself through work meets a warm, emotional man, and they rewrite their standards for work, love and happiness.
Kang Yi-ji is the rational one, a senior manager on the legal team who has pushed romance and marriage to the bottom of her list because she considers them little more than a hormonal reaction. Han Sun-woo is a sincere intern whose real passion is jewelry design. Park Hyun-tae is an executive director just back from the company's European headquarters, a boss who holds her in high regard for her competence.
The promotion so far plays up that contrast. Her teaser poster gives her full marks at work and marks her dating ability as unknown. Official stills show her first meeting with Sun-woo, when she holds his dropped phone hostage while reciting legal clauses. In the second teaser, released November 5, she passes over roses and a diamond ring to stay focused on her job.
Who Is in the Cast of Nine to Six?
Park Min-young, known for What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and Marry My Husband, leads as Kang Yi-ji. Yook Sung-jae of the K-pop group BTOB, also known for The Haunted Palace, plays Han Sun-woo. Go Soo plays Park Hyun-tae, his first romance role in 15 years.
Joo Hyun-young plays Shin Ji-won, Yi-ji's close friend and a homemaker of seven years, and Kim Mi-kyung plays Yi-ji's mother. Jung Hae-kyun, Jo Bok-rae and Cha Chung-hwa are the demanding bosses who make office life harder, with Nam Yoon-ho, Choi Ji-su, Cheon Woo-jin and Bae Yu-ram also in the cast.
Lee Hyung-min, whose credits include Strong Girl Bong-soon and I'm Sorry, I Love You, directs with Oh Song-hee from a script by Choi Ji-oh. Studio S and Samhwa Networks produce. If you like your SBS dramas set among lawyers, Good Partner Season 2 arrives on the same channel on November 20.
Is Nine to Six a Remake?
Yes. Nine to Six is adapted from The Rational Life, a Chinese series that aired in 2021 on Hunan TV and Mango TV. The Korean version is written by Choi Ji-oh and set at Chronic Motors, with its own cast and characters.
How closely it follows the original is something only the broadcast will answer, so treat The Rational Life as background and not as a preview. For another adaptation arriving this winter, see our guide to the webtoon behind GIFT.
Sori's Note
Listen to the line that closes the second teaser: "Tomorrow and the day after, I'll stay just the same." For a romance, that is an odd promise. Love stories usually sell change. This one sells constancy, to a woman who handles everything by the manual.
The title makes the same joke. Nine to six sounds like a contract, the hours you owe and the hours you keep. Watch where the drama puts its tenderest scenes, inside those hours or after them. That will tell you which half of her life it thinks needs rewriting.
