Who's in the Tantara Cast, and Who Do They Play?

Tantara is built around two childhood friends and the people who pull them into the music business. Netflix has introduced six characters so far:

Actor Character Who they are
Song Hye-kyo Min-ja Grows up poor, takes any work that pays, then throws herself into the record business
Gong Yoo Dong-gu Min-ja's childhood friend, who stays at her side and chases her dream with her
Kim Seol-hyun Min-hui A bold singer who goes after success in her own way, tied to Min-ja by love and resentment
Cha Seung-won Seok Gil-yeo The top composer of the era, able to turn a rookie into a star
Lee Hanee Yang-ja A singer who performs with desperation and joy in equal measure
Na Moon-hee Mal-soon Introduced on the poster with eyes that carry the joys and sorrows of the years

Song Hye-kyo, Gong Yoo and Kim Seol-hyun appeared together on stage at Netflix's 10th-anniversary fan event in Seoul in October, where each introduced their character. Song described Min-ja as a woman who throws herself into success from a young age, Gong called Dong-gu a man who fearlessly protects Min-ja's dream, and Kim described Min-hui as a bold character who pursues success her own way.

What Is Tantara About?

Start with the title. Tantara is the English spelling of ttantara, an old Korean nickname for entertainers, taken from the sound of a brass fanfare. It used to be said with a little scorn, and the series wears it with pride: Netflix's Korean announcement calls its characters the greatest ttantara of their time.

The story follows people who had nothing and bet everything on making it in show business, in an era Netflix describes as savage and violent. Min-ja and Dong-gu grow up poor together. As adults they work as nightclub waiters and take whatever jobs they can find, until they become rookie talent managers. Their first artist is Min-hui, and their path crosses with Seok Gil-yeo, the composer whose songs can make a star overnight.

Music carries the story, and the date announcement poster makes that literal: the characters circle a spinning record, with Min-hui singing and Gil-yeo on saxophone. If the poster puts you in the mood, Seoul's LP and listening bars are the closest you can get to the sound of that era on a night out.

Netflix's English synopsis describes friends from humble beginnings who seize their chance in the glitz of Korean showbiz and fight to turn grit into glory. Expect a long story about ambition and friendship rather than a quick romance.

Why Does the Song Hye-kyo and Gong Yoo Pairing Matter?

Song Hye-kyo and Gong Yoo have each led some of the most-watched Korean dramas of the last two decades, yet Tantara is the first drama they have made together. That alone explains why the project drew attention from the moment their casting was reported.

The people behind the camera add to it. Noh Hee-kyung is known for ensemble dramas about ordinary lives, including It's Okay, That's Love (2014), Dear My Friends (2016) and Our Blues (2022). Tantara is her third drama with Song Hye-kyo, after Worlds Within (2008) and That Winter, the Wind Blows (2013). Director Lee Yoon-jung made Coffee Prince (2007), the romantic comedy that starred Gong Yoo, so the series also reunites the two of them almost two decades later.

Tantara is also Netflix's big Korean release for the end of the year. If you are building a Netflix list before December 11, our guides to Take Charge of My Heart and Dead-End Job cover two more Korean originals on the platform.

Sori's Note

Ttantara was never meant as a compliment. For decades the word put singers and actors a rung below respectable work. A drama that takes it as its title, with two of the biggest names in Korean television, is quietly telling you whose side it is on.

That is why I am more curious about Min-ja and Dong-gu as managers than as stars. The people who carried the speakers and wrote the contracts rarely get the spotlight, and Noh Hee-kyung has always been at her best with people the camera usually walks past.

I'm Sori, BeautiPin Seoul's culture editor. In Korean, sori means sound, as in pansori, and sound is where my curiosity starts: a line from a drama, a chant at a festival, a chorus that travels the world. I keep too many playlists, collect concert pamphlets, and can't leave a tradition alone until I know why it survived.
