A2O SOUL's "Superstar" EP: Five Songs, Two Title Tracks and a Sound Called New Synthwave
A2O SOUL's debut EP "Superstar" is a five-track release arriving Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. Korea time on major streaming platforms. It has two title tracks, the pre-release single "Superstar" and the new "Dancing in the Dark," and the label builds all five songs around a sound it calls "new synthwave."
What Is on the EP, and When It Arrives
A2O SOUL will release its first EP, "Superstar," on Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. Korea time through major streaming platforms in Korea and abroad. It arrives about a month after the group introduced itself with a pre-release single of the same name on Oct. 13, and it holds five tracks.
Two of them are title tracks: "Superstar," the song you may already know, and a second lead track, "Dancing in the Dark." The other three songs have not been named publicly yet, but A2O Entertainment describes all five as "new synthwave." For listeners abroad, 6 p.m. in Seoul is 9 a.m. in London, 4 a.m. in New York, 1 a.m. in Los Angeles and 5 p.m. in Beijing on release day.
The physical album is planned in three versions, two photobook editions and one platform album, with pre-orders through retailers in Korea and overseas. If you are still sorting out who is who among the 15 members, our A2O SOUL members guide lists the full lineup and where each member is from.
New Synthwave, Explained
Synthwave, in general, is a style that revives the sound of 1980s synthesizers: glowing keyboard lines, steady electronic drums and a nostalgic, night-drive mood. A2O Entertainment calls its version "new synthwave" and defines it as a modern K-pop evolution of 1980s synthesizer-driven music, one that mixes retro, analog-style synth melodies and atmospheric textures with contemporary pop song structures and vocal arrangements.
You can already hear the idea in the single. "Superstar" puts bright synthesizers up front and lets the vocals pass across the lineup, a lighter and more melodic approach than the bass-heavy sound of labelmate A2O LITE. It is also a practical fit for a 15-member group: wide synthesizer textures leave room for many voices, so harmony can do the work that a single standout part does in a smaller team.
The word "new" is the label's claim, not an established genre, which is why the full EP matters. One song can introduce a sound. Five songs show whether it is a style or just a name.
Who Is Behind the Sound
Lee Soo-man, who founded SM Entertainment in 1995 and launched A2O Entertainment in 2024, oversaw the musical direction of the album, according to the label. He brought in overseas songwriters and producers he had not worked with before, alongside his longtime collaborator Yoo Young-jin, a producer long associated with SM Entertainment's biggest hits.
The credits on "Superstar" include Haan, who worked on The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber's "Stay," and Gent!, whose credits include music by Drake and Doja Cat, as described by the label. A2O Entertainment says the second title track and the remaining songs draw on the same pool of international producers.
That choice says something about the strategy. A2O SOUL is built as an international group, with members from five countries, and its most visible chart signals so far have come from China. A global writing team is the musical version of the same idea.
How "Superstar" Is Doing So Far, and What to Watch Before Nov. 9
Since its Oct. 13 release, "Superstar" has reached No. 2 on China's QQ Music new-song chart, No. 6 on its popularity chart and No. 4 on its global music video chart. It also reached No. 18 on YouTube Korea's trending music chart. On the QQ Music new-song chart, it sits just behind labelmate A2O LITE's "Neon," which puts the two A2O acts at No. 1 and No. 2. Our story on A2O LITE's "NEON" covers how that single won its first music show. Chart positions move daily, so treat these as a snapshot from the Oct. 22 reports.
The group has also kept performing "Superstar" on weekly music shows, including Mnet's M Countdown on Oct. 15 and again on Oct. 22. Official stage clips are posted on the Mnet K-POP and M2 YouTube channels, the music video is on the A2O SOUL channel, and a performance video is on A2O WORLD, the label's channel.

Sori's Note
A title is rarely just a title. "Dancing in the Dark" shares its name with Bruce Springsteen's 1984 hit, a synthesizer-heavy song from the very decade this genre label points back to. The label has not said it is a nod, so treat it as a coincidence worth noticing, not a claim.
What I would listen for on Nov. 9 is range. If the three unnamed tracks all sound like "Superstar," "new synthwave" is a brand. If they stretch it into different moods, it starts to look like a genre.
