What Does "Looks Can Kill" Mean? Inside IVE's Girl Hero EP and Its Six Tracks
"Looks Can Kill" plays on the English phrase "if looks could kill," and IVE uses it for a song about owning a room the moment you walk in. The six-track EP of the same name, the group's "girl hero" chapter, is released on October 26, a week after the title track and its music video came out on October 19 at 6 p.m. KST.
What "Looks Can Kill" Means
In everyday English, "if looks could kill" is what you say about a glare so fierce it feels like a physical blow. It is usually a warning, said about someone who is furious. IVE takes the phrase, drops the "if," and turns it into a statement about presence: the kind of look that changes the temperature of a room before a word is spoken.
Starship Entertainment has not published a line-by-line explanation of the title, but the official album introduction says plenty. It describes the title track as a song about IVE taking over a space the moment they appear, with confidence and initiative, and a music video that plays with superhero-film conventions, showing the members both as actors cast as heroes and as heroes in their own right. The same introduction adds a second layer: that admiration for someone can give you the courage to become the hero of your own story. On their first music show stage, the members put it in one line, introducing themselves as heroes whose power is to land a critical hit just by being there.
Musically, the title track is electronic dance pop. It opens on a synth pad, then builds on heavy bass, punchy drums and layered electronic sounds, with a bridge that sets up a final chorus.
Release Day and the Road to October 26
IVE announced the EP on September 27 through its official channels, with two dates on the poster: a "spin-off" pre-release on Monday, October 19, and the full album on Monday, October 26. The title track and its music video arrived on October 19 at 6 p.m. KST, about eight months after the group's previous album, REVIVE+.
For the full EP, the announced date is October 26. Korean releases usually go live at 6 p.m. KST, the same slot the title track used, so that is the hour to watch; check IVE's official accounts on the day for the exact time. In other time zones, 6 p.m. KST is 9 a.m. in London (GMT), 10 a.m. in Paris and 5 a.m. in New York.
The weeks in between were planned like a film campaign. The announcement teaser showed the release dates projected onto skyscrapers against the Seoul skyline, the tracklist came on October 4, concept photos ran from October 7 to 14, music video teasers followed on October 16 and 17, and a set of "HERO ON SET" photos landed on October 18. According to Starship, the music video reached No. 1 on YouTube's worldwide music video trending chart right after release and topped the chart in six countries and regions, including Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Canada and Brazil.
The Six Tracks and Who Wrote Them
The EP has six songs, in this order:
- "Looks Can Kill" (title track)
- "Mirror Mirror"
- "SNAKESKIN"
- "CRUMBS"
- "Girls Girls Girls"
- "Glow Motion"
Two credits stand out. Rei is among the lyricists of the title track, alongside Seo Ji-eum, who wrote the words for IVE's earlier hits "ELEVEN" and "LOVE DIVE," and Lil Cherry; Rei is also credited with the rap making. Rei has said she worked to carry the album's concept and story through the lyrics. On "CRUMBS," Gaeul and Liz wrote the lyrics. Liz's hope for the record is simple: that listeners finish it thinking, "That's IVE, as expected."
Only the title track has been heard so far. The other five songs arrive with the EP, so treat the titles as a map for now rather than a review.
The Girl Hero Concept, Chapter by Chapter
Looks Can Kill is the latest chapter in what IVE calls its girl fantasy series of alter egos. The group has already played Cupid and a magical girl; this time each member becomes a hero. The rollout was split into chapters with film-style names: "GIRL HERO," "HERO COMICS," "HERO ON SET" and finally "SPIN-OFF," the label on the pre-release single.
The video "Post Credit Scene: Girl Hero," released on October 6, introduced the cast like the opening of a superhero movie. Each member has a hero name and a color: An Yujin is Captain Purple, Gaeul is Wonder Green, Rei is Jean Yellow, Jang Won-young is Bat Pink, Liz is Super Blue and Leeseo is Spider Red. The "HERO COMICS" chapter moved the story to a hero training center, and "HERO ON SET" showed the members as actors on a film set, an idea the music video picks up with scenes of the cast waiting in director's chairs.
Where to See IVE Perform It
IVE first performed "Looks Can Kill" live on October 19 at a Spotify fan event in Gangnam, Seoul, then brought it to music shows: Mnet's M Countdown on October 22 and KBS2's Music Bank on October 23. The point move to look for is the "sniper" gesture, when the members aim a finger-gun hand forward, and the formation work uses staggered timing so the group moves like an action scene. The group's official channel has also posted a cheering guide, so you can learn the fan chant before you go.
The biggest scheduled stage is the Melon Music Awards. MMA2026 runs over two nights, November 14 and 15, at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, and IVE is on the November 15 lineup. ILLIT, whose BREAK EVEN comeback lands on the same October 26, is on that night too. Sori's Note
What I keep coming back to is the cheering guide. A K-pop fan chant is a script for the audience: you shout the members' names in the gaps the song leaves open, and for three minutes the crowd becomes part of the arrangement. Release a guide for a song about heroes, and the fans are no longer just watching the film. They are cast in it.
That fits a concept whose official story is about admiration turning into courage. The best place to hear the idea, then, is not the studio version on October 26 but a live room, when thousands of voices fill the spaces in the chorus.
