What Is wave to earth's "bad pieces" About? Inside the Album and the Road to the Pieces Tour

bad pieces is wave to earth's second full-length album, out August 7, 2026, with 11 tracks and two title songs, "courage" and "hyang." The title plays on "Bed Peace," the sign behind John Lennon and Yoko Ono during their 1969 bed-in, and the music steps away from the lo-fi jazz that made the trio famous toward older, analog-sounding instruments. Next comes the pieces tour: North America from September 4 in Vancouver to October 11 near Dallas, then Bangkok, Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Osaka and Tokyo in November.

bad pieces at a Glance: Why "Bed Peace"?

Say the title out loud and it almost turns into something else. "bad pieces" sits a couple of letters away from "Bed Peace," the hand-lettered sign that hung behind John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969, when the couple spent a week in bed in front of the press as a protest for peace. wave to earth borrowed the idea, bent the spelling, and built an album around it.

The band has explained the borrowing in plain terms. Daniel Kim, the singer and guitarist, said in the album announcement that John and Yoko seemed to find a state of peace inside their bed, and that he wants listeners to feel the same thing wherever they happen to be playing the record. So the bed becomes a small, private room for each listener, and the "bad pieces" become the imperfect parts of a person that the songs make space for.

Here are the basics. bad pieces came out on Friday, August 7, 2026, through the band's label, WAVY. It is the trio's second studio album, after 0.1 flaws and all. in 2023, and their first new record since the EP play with earth! 0.03 in September 2024, a gap of almost two years. There are 11 tracks, with "courage" and "hyang" as double title tracks, and the music video for "courage" arrived alongside the album.

Who Are wave to earth?

wave to earth is a three-piece indie rock band from Korea, and the lowercase name is deliberate: the band styles its own name, its album titles and its song titles in small letters. Daniel Kim sings and plays guitar, John Cha plays bass and Dong Q plays drums. They debuted in 2019 with a single called "wave," followed it with two EPs in 2020, wave 0.01 and summer flows 0.02, and released their first full-length album, 0.1 flaws and all., in 2023 after signing with WAVY.

Their sound travelled first and fastest online. "seasons," a 2020 track, has passed 500 million streams on Spotify, and "bad," from the 2023 album, went to No. 1 on Spotify's Viral 50 Global chart. By the time of this album, the band counted more than 7 million monthly listeners on the platform. That reach turned into ticket demand: Korean press reported that the 29-date North American run after play with earth! 0.03 sold out, as did the band's Seoul concert series of the same period, and the trio has played more than a hundred shows, including Lollapalooza in Chicago.

It is a useful reminder that Korean music crossing borders is not only an idol story. Alongside the pop acts you might follow on a K-pop trip to Seoul, a band like this one grew from small clubs and streaming playlists, and the conversation about Korean music without borders now includes guitars, bass and drums.

Leaving Lo-Fi Jazz Behind

Why would a band change the sound that made it famous at the very moment it was working? That is the question bad pieces raises, and the members have answered it themselves. wave to earth built its global audience on soft, jazz-tinted lo-fi rock. For this record, Daniel Kim said, the band studied a lot of records from the past and tried to bring in the sounds and instruments used on them, which felt analog and also gave them a new kind of inspiration. John Cha put it more bluntly: the earlier sound was already out there, so they could not simply repeat it.

The first sign of the change came on May 15 with "heaven and hell," the pre-release single and their first new song since 2024. The FADER described it as a warm gust of acoustic guitar and folksy pedal steel. It also came with something unusual for this band: a full, cinematic music video, directed by Maureen Hufnagel and shot in Mexico with tap dancers and local young people, after years of mostly posting visualizers and live clips. The band said the song is about the childlike purity they believe everyone still carries. Asked by the same magazine to describe the new album in three words, they chose "comfort, purity, lazy."

The other change is in who writes what. Kim said he always believed each member's own musicality should be heard in the band, and Cha said the songs each member brings have their own distinct character. On July 10, a short teaser called "babo" showed Kim playing guitar in silhouette against a dark sea, with strings rising behind him, a small preview of how wide the palette had become. If you are looking for an album for a slow evening outdoors, say a Han River night picnic, this is the band's most unhurried sound so far.

"courage," "hyang" and the Full Tracklist

The album has two title tracks, and they point in different directions. "courage" is the one with the video, and the video is where the Bed Peace idea becomes literal. It sets up a bed in an open field, under two signs that read BAD PIECE and BED PEACE, and surrounds it with observers. The film cuts between the band playing the song and people facing their own small moments of courage, so the bed-in turns into a picture of nerve rather than protest.

"hyang" is the quieter mystery. The word is Korean, and in everyday use it most often means a scent or fragrance. Some fans had heard it before release: the band played an unreleased song by that name at Seoul Jazz Festival in May and at a pop-up busking show in Singapore on June 1, a performance that drew about 1,500 people on short notice, according to Rolling Stone Korea.

Here is the official tracklist, in order:

  1. talking 'bout u
  2. everything comes and goes
  3. babo
  4. sing it all again
  5. skylark
  6. courage (title track)
  7. cherry flavoured love inside your heart
  8. hyang (title track)
  9. you
  10. heaven and hell
  11. closing.

Notice the placement. The two title tracks sit at six and eight, in the middle of the record rather than at the front, and "heaven and hell," the song that introduced this era in May, waits near the end, just before "closing." It reads like an album meant to be heard from start to finish, which fits a record named after a week spent lying still.

The Pieces Tour: Dates and Cities

The album now goes on the road. the pieces tour, promoted by Live Nation, is the biggest run of the band's career so far, with a North American leg in September and October and an Asian leg in November. The plan announced in May covers more than 20 cities in North America and eight in Asia, and Korean press reports put the total at about 30 shows once Seoul is added.

North America runs from Friday, September 4, in Vancouver to October 11 in Irving, Texas, just outside Dallas, with a stop in Mexico City along the way. Sori's Note

What interests me most is the word "pieces." Lennon and Ono asked for peace; wave to earth answers with pieces, the small, unfinished parts of a person. That is a gentler kind of protest, and maybe a more honest one for a band that has already lived through a viral hit and could easily have repeated it. You don't have to be whole to rest.

The title tracks hiding in the middle of the record say the same thing. Start at "talking 'bout u" and let it run to "closing." before you decide which piece is yours.

I'm Sori, BeautiPin Seoul's culture editor. In Korean, sori means sound, as in pansori, and sound is where my curiosity starts: a line from a drama, a chant at a festival, a chorus that travels the world. I keep too many playlists, collect concert pamphlets, and can't leave a tradition alone until I know why it survived.
